1. Make foods and drinks from different black cultures
Nothing brings people together like food which is what makes it a great way to connect with a range of black cultures. In our recent video, we break down the difference between cultural appropriation vs cultural appreciation. This black history month, you can celebrate black culture by supporting authentically sourced clothing from black cultures.
If you want to go a step further, you can do some research into the history behind some of the outfits you love. Here is a good one about the evolution of head wraps:

The portrayal of black people in popular media is largely negative. We can counteract this by normalising the celebration of black achievements in the games we play.
Why not play a game like Who Am I centred around black heroes?

7. Highlight the achievements of black people in your community
One powerful way you can empower and celebrate black people during Black History Month is by using your platform(s) to highlight the achievements of black people in your community.
Your voice has impact - use it. If you personally know someone who is doing amazing work, highlight them. If you don't, seek them out. Black History Month is not just about celebrating Rosa Parks and Martin Luther King Jr.'s, there are people in your community right now doing incredible things. Seek them out, shout them out, encourage people you know to check out their work.
8. Shop from a black owned business
Actions speak louder than words. If you're truly about celebrating Black people, put your money where your mouth is. By spending with a black owned business, you are contributing to financial equity for the black community. Currently less than 1% of venture capital goes to black founders. By shopping with black owned brands, you are helping to bridge the financial gap.
Here are some directories featuring amazing black owned businesses you can shop from:

10. Make history
Today, black people still face oppression and discrimination on a daily basis. The best way you can celebrate black history is by making it. What will generations to come to say about this moment in time? Did you make things better for black people?
You and I can make history by committing to be a part of the solution. Advocate for racial equality, raise anti-racist kids, educate yourself on black issues. The work isn't done, it's only just beginning. Here are some simple ways you can fight for racial equality:

Legend has it that two men from Bonwire, the home of Kente which is a village in the Ashanti region came across a spider spinning a web and this inspired Kente weaving and designs. The spider called Ananse is a popular character in Ashanti folklore and a fable known for being knowledgeable, creative and powerful. Ananse asked for favours in return for sharing his weaving skills.
Asantehene Osei Tutu, the first ruler and king of the Ashanti kingdom was so impressed when he found out about Kente that he decided it would only be reserved for royals and for use during special occasions. Kente print these days can be worn as everyday wear however Ghanaians typically and traditionally wear it on special occasions because of its origins. The original woven cloth even today is reserved for special occasions due to its cost, weight and as it still holds prestige.
Kente colours are often vibrant and the colours represent different meanings. In western culture we see Kente as an expression of West African and Ghanian and even African culture. In Ghana the meanings go deeper and further.

Gold is a colour that truly resonates with Ghanaians. It can be interchanged with yellow or orange and it is usually the dominant colour theme found in most Kente designs and is one of the four colours that features in the national flag. Other widely used Kente colours are red, green and blue.
The colours depending on how they have been placed together can contain a story or meaning. Most of the original Kente designs and patterns are named and the meanings are recognisable by locals in Ghana. They will then choose to wear a particular design because of the meanings.
As a Ghanaian I am proud of Kente and its origins, Kente is an important print for its representation of African culture that features in Cultureville collections. Shop the designs at www.cultureville.co.uk

Being invited to attend a wedding is a privilege. To make it on the final guest list you have most likely been hand picked from some of the closest friends and family of the happy couple. They have chosen YOU to be a witness to their love and joy. With this in mind, it is probably not a good idea to disrespect the couple, especially at an African wedding where one look from an African aunty can turn you to stone and their words cut like a knife. In this video we discuss some of the rules you need to abide by to avoid this fate.

]]>1. Side bag / Bucket bag
Side bags are definitely a must-have for your holiday. They ensure all your essentials safely stored while you travel, while their portable sizes mean you’re not weighed down as you embark on your adventures.
2. Bucket Hat
Combine fashion and function with a stylish bucket hat. Not only do they provide UV protection and preventing heat stroke in hotter climates, they also add warmth when in cooler climates all while making you look good!
3. Multifunctional Outfits
With many airlines decreasing their baggage allowances it’s important you get the most use out of each outfit you pack so we recommend the following:
Danshiki: A Danshiki is the multi-functional top for all occasions. It can be dressed up for nights out, tied as a crop top for days our or worn as a cover up for beach days.
Kaftan Set (For Him): This short and shirt co-ord set gives you three looks out of one outfit, in addition it’s super lightweight and comfortable while not compromising on style.
Kaftan Dress (For Her): Similarly to the Danshiki, the Kaftan dress can be paired with heels for a more formal look or worn with sandals for a more relaxed vibe. Again it’s super comfortable for the ultimate relaxation while you’re on vacay.
If you’re low on luggage space, these summer essential will definitely help you cover all your bases.

Our stunning African print fans are portable and you won’t have to worry about lugging additional gadgets like batteries or a charger with you.
5. Masks
While we are finally emerging from a pandemic, it’s important to stay vigilant so you don’t bring back any unwanted souvenirs from your trip. We advice packing a few reusable face masks to make sure you stay safe. These will definitely come in handy at the airport.

1. Arrange to be picked up at the airport
Stepping out of the airports in major cities like Lagos and Abuja, there is often a hubbub of activity with vendors selling everything from local currency to Nigerian snacks to offers to carry your luggage. It can be overwhelming and we highly recommend that you organise to be picked up by either family and friends or a taxi service. This will ensure you know exactly where you are going once you step out of the airport.
2. Eat at a Nigerian restaurant
Nigerian food is absolutely delicious so visiting a Nigerian restaurant while in the country is a must! You can expect to enjoy traditional dishes such as jollof rice, local delicacies such as pepper soup and sweet small plates such as puff puff (traditional African snack made of sweet fried dough) or chin chin (small Nigerian cookie-like snack made from fried wheat flour dough). Enjoy drinks which are loved across Nigeria like a delicious glass of chapman (a very popular mocktail) or a refreshing bottle of malt. We recommend visiting a restaurant with some live music like Nkoyo which features art by local artists, African print details on the tables and excellent customer service.
3. Visit arts and crafts markets
The arts and crafts markets in Nigeria are bursting with beautiful hand crafted pieces to be discovered. Explore the Lekki Arts and Crafts Market in Lagos or the Arts and Crafts Village in Abuja and be amazed by the work of local talented artisans, most of whom you can meet while visiting the markets. Be sure to request a discount when purchasing multiple products from a vendor and you can leave the markets with bags full of beautiful souvenirs for loved ones.
4. Enjoy Natural Attractions
From Aso Rock in Abuja to Gurara Waterfall in Niger State to Elegushi Beach in Lagos, there's a range of picturesque natural attractions you should visit while in Nigeria. We recommend planning your journey in advance and taking drinks and snacks so you can make the most of your day out. Gurara waterfall is a short drive from Abuja and you can get into the water, go hiking on the waterfall or have a picnic with the waterfall in the background.
5. Hire a driver on demand
A driver for the duration of your trip can be extremely useful if you wish to travel often and make the most of your time in Nigeria. You can request a driver from a car hire company or ask a taxi driver their fee for driving you for the duration of your trip. Set a pick up time and drop off time for each day. This will give you flexibility to easily move from place to place and the driver will help guide you on norms within different places. In addition, a driver is likely to assist you as they are more familiar with the city and will have the tips only the locals will know so you get the best of both worlds.

1. Wash in cool temperatures
High quality African prints are made from 100% cotton. Due to the way the prints are coloured they can sometimes be colour fast when exposed to high temperatures therefore we recommend hand-washing your Ankara in cool water. Life can sometimes get busy so if you'd rather opt to machine wash, temperatures below 30ºC are preferable - avoiding harsh cleaning agents like bleach. To preserve the vibrance of your Ankara, we suggest you only wash after a few wears depending on soils, stains and odour.
Top tips:
2. Air dry where possible
Cotton is known to shrink easily, particularly when exposed to the high temperatures of a tumble dryer therefore we recommend air drying where possible. Before drying we suggest giving your African print clothes a little stretch. For bright colours, it's best to avoid drying in direct sunlight as that would cause some of the vibrant colours to fade. If you're in a hurry we suggest tumble drying on a cooler setting and removing your the clothes before they are completely dry and allow the water evaporate slowly, reducing the chances of shrinkage.
Top tips:
3. Iron on the reverse side
While air drying will significantly reduce the wrinkles on your clothes, you may need to iron or steam for a crisp finish. We recommend ironing at medium heat on the reverse side of your garment. Where your African print is combined with other fabrics you way want to use a cloth between the iron and the fabric for additional protection.
Top tips:
4. Keep the clothes moths away
As cotton is a natural fibre, it is susceptible to clothes moths which can eat through your garments. These clothes moths feed on Keratin which is found in dust and in bodily secretions like sweat. The best way to prevent them is by keeping your clothes and wardrobes clean. Clothes moths are repelled by strong smells so another great way to prevent them is by diffusing your wardrobes with a little lavender, cedar wood or rosemary oil. This will not only keep the moths away but will have your clothes smelling beautiful.
Top tips:
We hope these tips help you care for your African prints and allow you to enjoy your Ankara garments for many years to come. If you have any questions feel free to drop them in the comments or send us a message.

Meeting the parents is an important step in a relationship and it can go amazing with you being welcomed into the family or it can go wrong and have you cringing with embarrassment every time you think about it. We have compiled a list of things to help you make the right impression when you meet African parents.
1. Be Respectful to the parents
Being respectful to parents is an absolute MUST in African culture. We are notorious for valuing respect especially to our elders and when you are invited to an African home, it is important you honour the leaders of the home. Greet them upon arrival and use formal greetings of 'Good evening sir' or 'Good evening ma'. Avoid using 'hello' or 'hi' which are much more informal and may be perceived as disrespect when addressing African parents. Do not address African parents by their first name under any circumstances, instead you may use 'uncle', 'aunty', 'ma', 'sir' and similar respectful titles.
2. Be Prepared
Prior to the day, find out more about the parents you’ll be visiting. What is expected and how are things done in that home? Do they prefer a formal cultural greeting like kneeling down for ladies or doing a ‘dobale’ (prostrating on the ground) for men? Are they more relaxed and receptive to hugs and kisses? Knowing these things in advance will make the day a lot easier as you’ll know more of what to expect and you’ll be less likely to leave a bad impression
3. Dress appropriately
Ensure you dress appropriately especially on your first visit. African parents are notoriously very judgemental and will assess your presentation. Do not wear something that exposes you inappropriately and avoid items like mini skirts and low cut tops that will have you pulling and tugging. Wear something you'll be comfortable in.
4. Offer to help
While you are in the home, offer to help in any way you can from cooking to washing dishes to setting the table. It is another sign of respect and it will most certainly be appreciated. It is also a sign that you have become one of the family because you are being a part of the members of the family usually do.
5. Get involved in the conversation
One thing that is always incredible is the conversation and the banter with African parents. Try not to be shy and get involved in the discussion. If you've been invited, they are interested in getting to know you so make it a wonderful experience by participating and enjoying yourself.
]]>
1. Get into a routine
Creating a routine will help your body adjust to the early mornings. The routine starts from the night before - prep your outfit for work and get your lunch packed so you have less to worry about in the morning. Make sure you carve out adequate time to sleep, you'll likely need more sleep than you did during the pandemic as you'll be more active throughout the day. Also ensure you start your work days right, perhaps with prayer or meditation as you prepare for human interactions.
2. Opt for flexible working
Working from home has major financial and time benefits. From saving money you'd usually spend on transport and lunch to saving time getting to work and the unavoidable distractions that come with working in an office. Bearing in mind these benefits, your employer may be open to you continuing to work remotely - at least for a few days in the week. By opting for a flexible arrangement, it will allow you to have those important face-to-face interactions with your colleagues without being interrupted by unnecessary meetings that could easily be an email.
3. Protect yourself
The ultimate reason we began working from home was to limit the spread of the virus and as we return, you may still be anxious about it. Protect yourself by booking your vaccine when you become eligible and in the meantime make sure you wipe down your work surfaces, wear a comfortable mask in common spaces and get tested regularly.
4. Take regular breaks
While in the office, schedule regular breaks. Socialising can be mentally and physically draining, especially after an entire year of limited face to face engagements and particularly if you're an introvert; so go easy on yourself. Don't put any pressure on yourself to be "social" because we are out of lockdown.
5. Enjoy the process
At some point during the pandemic, you missed seeing people face-to-face so enjoy the process. Indulge in those water cooler chats with your favourite colleagues, catch up on what people have been up to and get up to date with the office goss.
We hope these tips help make your transition back to the office much more enjoyable. If you find them useful, share them with a friend. Happy working!

About us:
As two young women born in Nigeria and brought up in the UK, we longed to walk into a store and see clothes that reflected our African heritage, in stylish designs that we could easily incorporate into our day-to-day wardrobes. Nothing like that existed at the time, so we set about creating it. We started by listing a few African inspired dresses on Depop and received overwhelming support, so we created an entire collection of luxury, hand crafted clothing and accessories featuring stunning Ankara wax prints made in West Africa by tailors and artisans and made it available worldwide, and so Cultureville was born.
